UPDATED March 22nd 2008

A trip to Chicks Beach brought a good day on Friday; it was a work/hooky day for me and Jackson.
Jackson and Cocoa at Chicks Beach enjoying the beach before the sunbathers and joggers take overWe started on the beach in front of Alexander’s on the Bay where Jackson met Cocoa a 7 month old Rottweiler.

With Jackson being a year and a half Border Collie he had plenty of energy to play with a 7 month old pup.

After a session on the beach it was off to Alexander’s to meet the new Chef.

Lynn Brewer has returned as the head Chef for Alexander’s on the Bay and is really stirring things up in the kitchen and pallets of patrons.
He's back! The kid Lynn Brewer has come home. After spending the last seven years at Steinhilber's, Lynn has returned to Alexander's on the Bay. The restaurant he helped open with the name sake A.G. (Angie) Alexander in 1984.
He brings back his love for classic dishes and a zest for introducing new twist on a variety of local seafood. Lynn believes in keeping his cuisine simple without cover-ups and being pretentious ... a truly humble chef.

According to Lynn Alexander’s will be introducing an all new menu just in time for spring that is sure to tempt even the most discriminating pallets on the East Coast. Check out Lynn’s Mug and bio here: Alexander's New Chef Bio and Mug

HK on the Bay and The Almost Famous Band put on a Great Saturday night in Chicks Beach.

It was Saturday May 12th The Alost Famous Band was playing their first gig in Chicks Beach since the close of the Café and fittingly so it happened to be at HK on the Bay.

We started the night letting the valet park our car at Alexander’s on the bay for a sunset “Favorite Beverage” at the bar. Valerie took great care of us as we met friends who were also going to see the show. After a few “Favorite Beverages" it was off to HK on the Bay for the show. From the images below you can see what a great time was had by all. As well as you can see some of the hotties HK has working for them and the service was great even with the crowd.

All the regular faces from the area where there to support one of the areas greatest bar bands The Almost Famous Band. They Rocked! Their was even a surprise appearance on the fiddle by the areas most well known fiddle player Charlie Austin.

A great time was had by all and responsibility ensued when at the end of the night the limousines from Park Ave Limousines where called out for rides home. Don’t forget to call Park Ave Limousines for a ride home if you have had too much to drink.(757) 461-1331 It’s a cheap one way fare with no minimum time limit and the drivers are great!

Chicks Beach Valentines Day Specials

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2/8/2007 8:06PM

Who says HK on the Bay doesn’t have live entertainment? This past Saturday was a blast with this band…anyone know their name? we forgot and lost their cards but they really jammed. It was a great night with great food and great service. Finely a place you can count on that’s on the corner of Fentress and Lookout.

The best practice would be to start at Alexander’s on the Bay for a sunset beverage at the greatest bar and bartenders in Chicks Beach, after a “Favorite Beverage” or three walk two blocks west and stop in HK on the Bay.

And for those of you that have not experienced HK on the Bay yet, take note… this is a non-smoking restaurant that means no more smoky clothes and hair at the end of the night. But fear not smokers, there’s a nice patio and cover to go outside for a smoke.

Here are just a few pics from the night at HK. You should check it out. Click the small images for the larger versions

Another weekend has come and gone in Chicks Beach.

Alexander's on the Bay, Chicks Beach

We started with the intention of starting with something to eat at the bar in Alexander’s on the Bay. There were more than a few people with this idea. The scenery is great there at night, with the lights of the Bay Bridge Tunnel reflecting off the water shining into the bar. I was a warm night Saturday and the door to the bar was left open. The moon was an incredible site as it rose from the south over the bay.

Alexander's on the Bay, Chicks Beach

Alexander's on the Bay, Chicks Beach

Shannon was on hand and ready with her new shooter called the “Sneak Attack”. A couple of these and you’ll know where it got its name. We left Alexander’s on the Bay with intentions of heading to the Parrot but we eneded up at HK on the Bay instead. We had a few “Favorite Beverages” and then realized we should call a Limo to take us home.

Alexander's on the Bay, Chicks Beach

The manager at HK had no problem with us leaving the truck in the lot all night and so that’s what we did.

Alexander's on the Bay, Chicks Beach

10 minutes later a brand new Lincoln Town Car pulled up out front. I was one of our favorite drivers Len. Lan came in and let us know he was there and that we could take our time and finish our beverages. After that it was history, Len brought us home and everyone was safe.
Again thanks to Park Ave. Limousines (757) 461-1331 for providing us a safe alternative to getting home after enjoying our “Favorite Beverage”.

The next morning some friends wanted to have breakfast. We explained the Truck was left at HK so we decided to get the truck and head to the Parrot for breakfast.

Now we are all Mimosa drinkers for breakfast but were real impressed by the new Bloody Mary Bar at the Parrot. This thing had all a bloody Mary lover could think of, from horse radish to celery and hot sauce everything was there for your customized Bloody Mary.

Our friends had never been to the Parrot for breakfast. Every Sunday we go out with them for breakfast. This Sunday they were especially impressed with the breakfast the Green Parrot had to offer. “That was the best breakfast pound for pound in Virginia Beach” said my one friend. Even his 6 years old son put a hefty dent in his stack of three large pancakes. (he/s very finicky when it comes to pancakes).

We ended the morning at the Parrot talking to the man in Chicks Beach who’s been there for years the “G man” ,“Pound for Pound the largest man in Chicks Beach”

The morning was nice and called for a stroll on the beach before heading home. The tide was very high Sunday Morning and there were a few fishermen out there but not much biting, just saw one guy throwing a mirror lure and landed one trout about a pound and a half. We walked back to the truck and headed home. Man what another great weekend in the hood. You couldn’t have asked for better weather. Lets hope it stays nice like this for a while. We’re not quit ready for winter yet.

New Years in Chicks Beach was a great way to start 2007.

Many folks opted for the meal at one of the four places down there for dinner and continued through out the night with a favorite beverage stopping by many of the places after dinner sort of bar hopping in a way.

The big winners of the night and into the early AM was The Green Parrot Grille. They had an excellent dinner of Steak and Lobster that included a bottle of champagne and for those that got a little tipsy there was of coarse a free limousine ride home from Midnight until 3:00PM. And you could leave your car parked overnight with worrying about being towed. That by far was the nicest touch put on by a restaurant in Chicks Beach. A special thanks to J.R. and Laurie for such a great idea. A lot of fun was had by many and all who celebrated the New Year at The Green Parrot.

The 2007 2nd Annual Chicks Beach Martini Classic shaping up. Already there are 14 Judges who have been accepted. Only a few positions remain before ChicksBeach.com cuts off applications for Judges for the Martini Classic. To apply to be a judge and be driven by Limousine from home, out to the contestants and back home again click the link here and view the message board post about becoming a Judge.

Speaking of the message board, we have 40 registered users. Our users have posted a total of 52 articles. There’s some good reading and conversation starting up. Don’t miss the cheap shots and gossip! Put in your opinion of the non-smoking policy at the newest restaurant in Chicks Beach, HK on the Bay. Thers some strong opinions about this topic. Check out the Board Here

Theirs a new Book Review from Trixy at Trixy’s Corner. Sons of Fortune by Jeffrey Archer. This is probably her best review yet! You must see it here!

We hope everyone had a good, happy and safe holiday season. Were starting to make the turn. Already the sun sets one minute later each day. It won’t be long before a “Favorite Sunset Beverage” at Alexander’s on the Bay will be in order.

Another weekend in Chicks Beach

Jon Hartz was busy at play this weekend. He traveled outside the proverbial Chicks Beach down Shore Dr. Check out his editorial adventure here: http://www.chicks-beach.com/site_files/jon_hartz.html

The Mayor has posted a new “Toast of the Week” you can catch up on all his toasts here: http://www.chicks-beach.com/site_files/mayor-toast.html

The Green Parrot Grille is still pouring Happy Hour from 12:00 noon to 8:00PM with $1.50 domestic bottles, well drinks and $2.00 Coronas and Heinekens. Tuesday night is the night at the Green Parrot Grille. Besides that an incredible musician calls the Parrot home on Tuesday nights starting at 8:30PM (Dahna Rowe and the Diablo’s) every Tuesday night. There is a new Hotness behind the bar at the Parrot, and her initials are Sarah. Sarah is a seasoned bartender with the super capabilities to anticipate your every move and she’s right there with “Your Favorite Beverage”. You can check out photos from last Tuesday at the Parrot and see Dahna Rowe here: http://www.greenparrotgrille.com/photos-004.html

Now for the Chicks Beach rumors.
Some one or several people are spreading the rumor that HK on the Bay has said “They will bury the Parrot” we heard that and know this didn’t come from the owners. We know Kevin and Brian very well. Then another rumor came out much the same as the first but this time it was quoted that HK on the Bay is saying “We’re going to bury Alexander’s on the Bay” This is all BS rumors. HK on the Bay is a fresh new place, still getting things together and sampling the neighborhoods tastes. No one is going to “Bury” anyone. That’s not what HK is about. Who ever is spreading these rumors is a punk. We finally got a decent respectable business on the corner of Fentress and Lookout, lets give them the time to get their operations together before dragging them into a pissing match between establishments. Apparently these rumors are coming from folks that don’t have anything to do with HK anyway so when you hear them you should disregard them and consider the source…the original source.

Don’t forget January 27th is the 2nd annual Chicks Beach Martini Classic. We are still accepting applications for judges for the classic. As a judge you will be picked up in a limousine and brought to each of the 4 ABC licensed restaurants in Chicks Beach to sample what they consider their best Martini. Judges will be driven home after the final Martini tasting and the final vote on this years winner.

Judges are responsible for purchasing their own “Favorite Beverage” and Martini at each place in order to be able to vote. If nothing else it’s a free ride in a limo that night. Limousines are being provided by Park Ave. Limousines. (757) 461-1331 Better call and book now for New Years as they are filling up fast.

You can register for the Martini Classic by registering at the ChicksBeach.com message board http://www.chicks-beach.com/phpBB2/

So far there are 8 Judges for the 2nd Annual Chicks Beach Martini Classic. There are only a few spots left so sign up fast to be a judge!

HK on the Bay takes Chicks Beach by storm in one night.

HK on the Bay in Chicks Beach

We were invited to a friends and family only night at HK on the Bay. This was the first night they were open and running everything.

HK on the Bay in Chicks Beach

We were greeted at the door where we were told our table was waiting. As soon as we sat our waitress came to tell us about the evening and take our drink orders.

HK on the Bay in Chicks Beach

Less than 3 minutes after we received our drinks an appetizer was on the table with a plate for each of us.

HK on the Bay in Chicks Beach

The order of the night was that they were testing all the appetizers.

HK on the Bay in Chicks Beach

One after another each of the appetizers on the menu was delivered to our table. After all the appetizers our waitress asked if we were ready to order…whew! We just had a load of food, but we went for it anyway.

HK on the Bay in Chicks Beach

I had the Blackened Tuna and Laurie had the filet. Just as it was in Hells Kitchen on Granby St. so was the preparation of our meals at HK on the Bay. Everything was cooked to perfection.

An overall description of the night would include words like “amazing” Superb” “Incredible” “Delicious” “Excellence” just to name a few words.

HK on the Bay in Chicks Beach

ChicksBeach.com gives the proverbial two thumbs up to Kevin and Brian for a job well done in a relatively short amount of time. They have successfully changed that old building on the corner of Lookout and Fentress into a reputable business and an incredible restaurant. The staff was beautiful and courteous, anticipating your next desire.

HK on the Bay in Chicks Beach

One thing that’s very different is the way the dining room is set up.

HK on the Bay in Chicks Beach

There’s a window from the dining room that looks into the kitchen so you have an opportunity to watch your meal being prepared. (Nice Touch Kevin and Brian)

HK on the Bay in Chicks Beach

So it goes without saying you must visit HK on the Bay. They are open to the public Monday December 4th so make time and take your significant other out on a date they will not soon forget. From the interior decoration, to the new layout and bar, to the perfection cooked into each plate that comes out of the kitchen.

HK on the Bay in Chicks Beach

Now after filling our bellies with some of the best food to come out of that building in decades Jimmy Banks the limo driver took us to the Green Parrot were we picked up some friends. We first went to Alexander’s on the Bay. Alexander’s has done it again with the decorating of the entire restaurant and bar with thousands of Santa Claus’s. The rumor is that if you can guess how many Santa’s are displayed there is some sort of prize involved.

Alexander's on the Bay in Chicks Beach

Once again Valerie was behind the bar serving everyone’s favorite beverage. A good time was had by all at the greatest Bar in Chicks Beach. We closed them down early and headed back to the Limo. Jimmy stopped at a friends house where we stocked up on Champaign and we were back on the road again. Jimmy drove us around looking at the Christmas lights as we sipped our drinks.

We dropped our friends off later in the night and ended up at the Green Parrot for a night cap. There we are again with a “Favorite Beverage” in hand when the ugly lights get turned on… yup it was last call. We tabbed out and good Ole’ Jimmy had the Limo parked out front waiting patiently for us to exit. He helped us into the limo and drove us home for the night.

Park Ave. Limos in Chicks Beach

It goes without saying that a couple hundred bucks for a limo for the night sure beats $25,000.00 for a DUI and possible harm to us or others. Yes we talk a lot about enjoying our “Favorite Beverage” to excess but we always practice responsibility before we even have our first “Favorite Beverage” We call 461-1331 and talk to Bruce, we let him know our plans and he replies with the name of a driver and car type and then lets you go. Within a few short minutes a call comes from the driver letting us know, he has our number; he is on the way and will call if he gets lost looking for you. Park Ave. Limousines is a real first class organization with first class transportation and courteous drivers that know their way around the area very well.

Go ahead, call 461-1331 and treat your significant other to a first class date with a Limo ride to HK on the Bay and enjoy the evening from there.

Speeding and Tipping…

Two things that seem to be becoming more and more popular, or rather increasing with displeasure of the neighborhood is the speeding that occurs and the lack of tipping.

The first complaint about the neighborhood is the speeding. It’s a fact that even if you’re going 10mph over the speed limit chances are your not going far enough to really make a difference in arrival time.

One thing is for sure, you’re taking the lives of people around you and your passengers as well as your own safety for granted. Just a split second is all it takes to make a mistake. You have to remember that there are children and pedestrians walking around the neighborhood and you speeding does not make it any safer.

We all want a safe neighborhood for our friends, family and children to enjoy. So slow down and be safer, think smarter and everyone will benefit from your decisions in driving around Chicks Beach.

Now for the slam…this is for all of you that think $2.00 on $30.00 is an adequate tip. YOUR WRONG! Just for a quick reference you should tip at least $1.00 per drink that is served. Or at least 15% of your total bill. There is one golden rule about going out in Chicks beach… If you cannot afford to tip DON’T EVEN GO OUT! Just save everyone the trouble and go to Jr. Market and get your own “Favorite Beverage”. The $1.00 per drink or 15% is just for regular service. You should tip more if the service is better than average. If you don’t feel this amount is appropriate for your tip, explain to the manager why you feel this way. The manager at any Chicks Beach business will be glad to hear why your not tipping and what they can do to better the service for future visits to there establishment.

Remember all the staff in Chicks Beach are hard working dedicated professionals and should be treated as such. They don’t get a really big hourly wage if they get one at all. They rely on tips from the good folks that visit the establishment.

Yea and leaving anonymous messages on the message board that someone’s “drinks suck” isn’t the way to go about resolving the issue you may have experienced. At least explain why they sucked and what should be done to rectify the issue.

If you run a tab that’s $50.00 or more $20.00 should be the minimum tip. $100.00 or more and you should start kicking back at least 20% to the server that has been taking care of you.

It sure would be embarrassing if you name appeared on the website as a deadbeat tipper. If you go to a place more than once and don’t tip appropriately you’re not going to be first on the servers list of people to take care of.

It’s a fact that the better you tip, the more you’re remembered and the better the chances of you getting preferential treatment as compared to those patrons that are known not to tip.

That being said… Jon Hartz has a new Editorial Adventure for your enjoyment. Check it out here as Jon visits Alexander’s on the Bay for an evening meal at the bar.

Want your voice to be heard? Visit the new Chicks Beach message board.

If you’re interested in becoming a judge in the 2nd annual Chicks Beach Martini Classic go to the message board and sign up. Judges are picked up at home in a limousine and brought home in the limo so there’s no driving for judges that night. Check out the details on the message board the topic title is “Roll Call 4 Martini Classic 2007. It takes place on Saturday January 27th.

Have fun this week, slow down in the neighborhood and remember to take care of your bartenders and wait staff.

The story behind Halloween. Paul celebrated his 66th Birthday tonight at the Parrot. Awesome Paul! Happy Birthday!

John and Sarah Glaze placed first in the custom contest. But really, more importantly, they married in costume today at the courthouse. Sarah and John met through her brother. John and "Robin" were roommates. Sarah would send her brother care packages and his roommate one too. Later she met John, and they hit it off. Now, they live in Chicks Beach. Not only is John Sarah's new husband, he is her brother's best friend. Congratulations.

Halloween Weekend in Chicks Beach

There’s much to be said about a Holiday weekend in Chicks Beach. Halloween is on Tuesday this year so most folks celebrated during the weekend as Tuesday is a school night.

Alexander's on the Bay, Chicks Beach

Friday night started at one of our favorite places, Alexander’s in The Bay. One of the newer Bartenders Jeremy was taking good care of us making sure we always had a full “Favorite Beverage” And as you can see by the photos, Plenty of “Favorite Beverages” were to be had. As a regular to the Bar at Alexander’s its easy to get caught up with all the other locals and before you know it you’re the last people in the restaurant, the Valet brings your keys and tells you your vehicle is in front of the door for when you are ready to leave. Those Alexander’s Valet guys are great. Their fast courteous and take care of the ladies first when pulling in or leaving. The next time you visit Alexander’s on the Bay make sure you carry a few bills so you can tip these guys. Its getting cold out and they stay outside waiting for you, so show your appreciation when they give you the finest service in Valet parking in Virginia Beach.

Alexander's on the Bay, Chicks Beach

After a few “Favorite Beverages” served up by the "Quickest Pour in the East", Bartender Jeremy from Alexander’s on The Bay, it was off to a secret watering hole in Chicks Beach. One of the nicer underground hangs in Chicks Beach this place offered a fully stocked bar, 2 TVs and a roaring Fireplace. The bar was spacious for just enough people to make a small party. Food was served and after a Few “Favorite Beverages” served up by the host it was off to the Parrot to finish the night. BTW it was a Friend having friends over for a “Favorite Beverage” compliments of the host. AND NO!! THIS ISNT BEETLES HOUSE!"

Underground, Chicks Beach

Our time there was enjoyed responsibly as old friends and acquaintances got together to exchange stories about what’s been going on in our lives during the work week and since we last saw each other.

Green Parrot Hotties, Chicks Beach

As you can see the Green Parrot Grille in Chicks Beach attracts some of the more attractive females in the area. Here you can see that not only are the Green Parrot bartenders easy on the eyes, their hottie friends often come to the bar to visit them after work.

Underground, Chicks Beach

Needless to say this was another one of those nights when we had to call Park Ave. Limousines to help us out of a jam. The Parrot was nice enough to allow us to leave our vehicles there for the night and the Limo pulled up right at last call to scoop us into the back for a safe ride home. Remember A limo ride is cheaper than a DUI any day or night. Do everyone a favor, especially for your friends and loved ones and other in the community. If you have had a few “Favorite Beverage” Call Park Ave. Limos. They have a nice fleet of cars with very reasonable prices for getting you home if you have a few too many. Call 461-1331. Explain that you need a ride because you’ve had a few too many and Park Ave will be right there for you with no minimum time charge. Ask for the Chicks Beach Discount for a safe ride home and the owner himself will set you a great price for being responsible enough to not try to drive home your self. All of the Park Ave Limo drivers are very familiar with the Chicks Beach area. Chance are if you’ve seen a limo in the hood it was Park Ave. saving someone a DUI and possible the life of you or the person being driven. Don’t forget they offer a full service for special occasions, Birthdays, Bachelor and Bachelorette Party’s and more. We even used them to take a group of us to FedEx field for a Redskins game one time, now that’s fun!

Park Ave. Limos, Chicks Beach
Keg Stand, Chicks Beach

Now for some more fun that wasn’t exactly inside Chicks Beach. Here are a few Photos of how some of the local Bartenders enjoy their birthday. This one photo is a birthday bartender executing the infamous “Keg Stand”. The beer was ICE COLD so brain freezes were common this night. But there’s nothing that will take care of a brain freeze like a dip in a 102 degree Hot Tub.

Keg Stand, Chicks Beach

Much fun was had inside and outside Chicks Beach. A special thanks for a wonderfully fun weekend goes out to Alexander’s On the Bay for providing for a relaxed jump start to the weekend. Everyone should visit the finest bar in Chicks Beach with the greatest view in all of Virginia Beach. Thanks to close friends who invited us to the secret underground bar for a “Favorite Beverage”. Thanks to the Green Parrot Grille for firing up the fryer at last call so a few people that had a few too many “Favorite Beverages” could get some food on their stomachs to soak up the excess alcohol before leaving. Another thanks to Green Parrot for offering worry free over night parking to encourage responsibility and good judgment when deciding to drive or not to drive. It really helps knowing your vehicle will be safe overnight. And finally a very special thanks to Park Ave. Limousines (461-1331) for coming through in a moments notice to give rides home for those that couldn’t or shouldn’t have driven this weekend.

Keg Stand, Chicks Beach

The Halloween weekend isn’t over yet. Tuesday night is actually Halloween. The Green Parrot Grille is having a Halloween Costume party complete with live music, Specials and prizes for best costumes.

Green Parrot, Chicks Beach

Hope to see you all at the Parrot Tuesday night.

The pink building at the corner of Lookout and Fentress has been leased to a new business! The building will no longer be pink; they are changing it to a Kaki color. The interior is being completely remodeled. You can see the pics in this article along with a sneak peak at the menu! The interior colors will be Kaki, Red, Black and decorated with original art from local artist Corey Campbell. There will be a covered patio and eventual replacement of the old patio entirely with a newer more accommodating patio for those great outdoor days we are so looking forward to already this time of year.

HK on the Bay Chicks Beach

The owners have decided to name the place “HK on the Bay”. It’s the same owners that have successfully pulled off one of downtown Norfolk’s greater restaurants “Hells Kitchen”.

Now “HK by the Bay” is not meant to be a carbon copy of the Granby St. restaurant, they plan to bring a few things from the menu over but want to really push the excellence in food preparation and service.

One thing was made clear with talking with the new owners, they want to push food first and the beverages are secondary. (But rest assured Chicks Beach, HK by the Bay will be included in the annual Chicks Beach Martini Classic).

They plan on having a brunch on the weekends from 9:00PM – 2:00PM with a mobile chef that prepares your brunch right in front of your table. They intend to have an Omelet Chef, a Fajita Chef and a carving station as well as a bloody Mary bar.

The idea is to focus on the cuisine of the establishment. They are leaving the doors to the kitchen and staff area open so customers can see the work going into each meal they prepare. There was even the thought of a “Crab Day” but nothing is official about this yet.

HK on the Bay Chicks Beach

December 1st is currently the tentative opening date. There is still a lot of work to be done as you can tell by the photos. The windows that line the wall along Fentress Ave. are to each have a booth in front each of them. The booths will be on a raised floor to give more depth to the old flat dinning area we all used to know.

HK on the Bay Chicks Beach

The most appealing aspect to this whole remodeling effort is that their will be an entirely brand new kitchen. The kitchen will be decked out with all shiny new appliances with a different layout that caters to the customer’s eye as the food is prepared.

HK on the Bay Chicks Beach

So it’s officially a farewell to the old building on the corner of Lookout and Fentress that has been known as the Chicks Beach Café for decades.

Welcome to the Neighborhood HK on the Bay were all pleased that their will finally be a respectable establishment to compliment the current businesses now operating in the neighborhood. Keep up the good work and effort; we can’t wait for December now.

Check out the sneak peak of the menu here

A Saturday Night in Chicks Beach.
With all that’s going on in Chicks Beach Its time to go over the changes happening in the hood.
The first one is the story behind that building on the corner of Fentress and Lookout. After the interview ChicksBeach.com took some time off to travel and then come back and find out what the “Hell” was going on. Driving by you can see someone is gutting the whole inside. Word from the contractors doing the work is that it’s being totally remodeled.
So to the phones I went. I got in touch with my contact at the property management office and confirmed that lease negotiations were finalized and the lease has been signed. A new restaurant is going to be open by December. The nPMe: “HK by the Bay”
These are the fellas that own Hells Kitchen in Norfolk on Granby St. in downtown. If you haven’t been there you really should go. It’s a unique place with a great atmosphere and menu. ChicksBeach.com has tried it several times and had nothing but the best in experience there. From attentive wait staff to incredibly prepared meals everything was first class; but with very reasonable prices and generous portions.
It’s a relief to see that someone with a proven record of great food and customer service is moving into the hood. Applications are being accepted at the Granby St. location for limited positions when they open. These guys have their gPMe together and look as if they already have a trained staff just waiting for them to open so they can get the operation off the ground and running as soon as the doors open.
Welcome to the hood guys, we can’t wait to have our first dinner and “Favorite Beverage” there.
In light of the new “HK’s” opening in December the annual ChicksBeach.com Martini Classic will be postponed until “HK’s” is open and can participate. So it looks like the holiday season is starting to take form in Chicks Beach. Look for more on “HK’s” and the Martini Classic toward the Holidays.

In Other news, Alexander’s on the Bay had a change of guard at the bar. ChicksBeach.com would like to introduce “Valerie”. She fit right in with the locals having done research with the help from Shannon and in no time she knows all the locals “Favorite Beverage” and anticipates when you will need one or another one, depending on how long you have been there.

Valerie at Alexanders

As it was her inaugural night bartending ChicksBeach.com put her on the spot and insisted she invent a shot for us, and then we would all nPMe this new shot.
The outcome: “The Quad V” this shot takes advantage of three types of Vodka with a citrus mixer. The fourth “V” comes from her nPMe. The consensus was mixed as far as if a chaser was needed. In any case it was a good shot and a good job by Valerie on her first night to be able to come up with a drink that will most certainly be ordered again.
If you happen by Alexander’s on The Bay, stop in if not for just one “Favorite Beverage” and to say hello to a new face in Chicks Beach. Welcome to the hood Valerie, we hope to see you again soon!

And About Halloween! The Green Parrot Grille is having a Halloween Party Tuesday October 31st. They are having Food Fun and Treats, Live music (artist TBA) and Cash Prizes for the best costumes.

You have to give it up for the Green Parrot keeping a long running tradition of a Halloween costume party for Halloween.

Phone interview with Kevin Blair Partner/Owner of Hells Kitchen on Granby St. in Norfolk.

ChicksBeach.com: Are you in fact in negotiations with Dubay Properties over the lease for the old Café building?
Kevin Blair: Yes

ChicksBeach.com: Will the Café be nPMed Hells Kitchen or another nPMe?
Kevin Blair: It will be a new nPMe for that building; we’re thinking “HK on the Bay”

ChiciksBeach.com: Will you have the sPMe menu as the one on Granby St. Or a whole new menu?
Kevin Blair: For the most part it will be an all new menu, it will feature some of the Granby St. favorites but we will be offering more seafood. We’re thinking of Sundays being “Baltimore Seafood Bash”

ChicksBeach.com: Do you plan on having live entertainment?
Kevin Blair: That’s something we are considering but haven’t made a decision on that as of yet.

ChicksBeach.com: What are your thoughts on bringing back the Sunday open mic night?
Kevin Blair: Again, we haven’t decided on live entertainment or not.

ChicksBeach.com: Thanks you for your time Kevin, the neighborhood is excited an honorable business may be the new neighbors in the hood.
Kevin Blair: Thank you, we’re excited at the opportunity to have a chance at meeting the neighborhood and serving them as best as we can.

Just outside Chicks Beach

Well maybe not “just outside” but it’s worth a trip. Were talking about Granby St. in Downtown Norfolk. There’s a great place called Hells Kitchen. The inside is decorated in black and red with vintage paintings hanging from the walls. The music was a little intimidating at first, but quickly becPMe fPMiliar as they play a wide variety of music. The staff is outstanding. The menu is great and the prices are right. For exPMple Wednesdays are “Date Plate” night. This is two 6oz filets with two sides each and it’s only $13.95. So we order the “Date Plate” we ordered the filets medium rare, and they cPMe out perfectly medium rare, not medium like most places serve when you ask for medium rare. They had some interesting sides, the garlic green beans are a favorites.

So why all the talk about a place outside Chicks Beach? Because you should make the trip and perhaps fPMiliarize yourself with Hells Kitchen. A reliable source has confirmed that these guys from Hells Kitchen are currently in lease negotiations with Dubay Properties to open a business at the building on the corner of Lookout and Fentress. As it stands now, there is anticipation of about two months of renovations with a possible grand opening sometime in mid-late November.

This is good news, every person in Chicks Beach has speculated and it looks like something is coming to fruition. Do you know what this means? Besides another great restaurant in the hood, it means ChicksBeach.com sponsored pub crawls in the hood. It means another competitor for the Annual ChicksBeach.com Martini Classic. It means added value to the surrounding properties because of the reputation of a place like Hells Kitchen.

More info about this potential new neighbor in Chicks Beach will be out as soon as we find out more. Right now ChicksBeach.com is seeking interviews with Hells Kitchen owners. They will be published as soon as we can get them.

In the meantime don’t forget the places that have been there for us the whole time.

Alexander’s On the Bay is still serving some mean “Favorite Beverages” for the sunset on the deck. And this time of year the weather is perfect for one of these. The bar menu Chicken Wrap comes highly recommended while enjoying your “Favorite Beverage” at the bar. And remember, just because they Valet cars don’t mean you need a reservation to enjoy everything Alexander’s On the Bay has to offer.

The Green Parrot Grille is open Mon – Fri from 10:30PM till 2:00PM and as far as we know they still serve breakfast Saturday and Sunday 9:00PM – noon.

Don’t forget to check the site (scroll down this page) for free desktops and wall papers from the 4th Annual Chicks Beach Regatta.

The official word about the Café

ChicksBeach.com called this a while ago.

With help from locals and the many people who responded to ChicksBeach.com about the poor service and facilities at the Café, it’s finally over.

This is the official word on the Café.
The Chicks Beach Cafe is closedThe Café has been locked down by the property owner. The property owner is currently in negotiations over the lease with a potential new business owner. There are more than 20 applicants trying to get in there. The building on the corner of Fentress and Lookout will no longer be called The Chicks Beach Café. The new nPMe will be who ever takes the new lease. It will be a whole different establishment with ALL new owners. When this will happen no one knows as lease negotiations can vary in time for both parties to agree on the terms. According to the source on this matter “We are hoping to have a new business in the building before Thanksgiving”

So there you have it. This is the word from the source. If you are interested you may call Dubay Property’s at 460-6550 to inquire about your own business there, they still are accepting applications during the negotiation process.

In other news Dubay Property’s has a unit on Oceanview Ave. for rent. It is a top level 3 bedroom property that will lease for $1500.00 per month. If your interested call Dubay Property’s at 460-6550.

This weekend is “Shot weekend” in Chicks Beach. When you visit the Green Parrot ask for the “Joe Fred 29er” you will really enjoy this shot. When your at Alexander’s on the Bay you should ask for either the “Joe Fred 29er” or the bartender Sarah’s special “Next Level”. These are the most popular shots being served in Chicks Beach today.

Have fun, watch for the school children and be careful on Shore Dr.

It seems the Café is closed. Most people who saw it first saw the pad locks on the door and a sign that said no entrance or Trespassing, then later on the sign was replaced with one signed by Dan saying it was closed for vacation. Now seriously who closes a business on Labor Day Weekend because they went on Vacation,The Chicks Beach Cafe is closed the staff there was well trained enough to run the Café while a vacation took place. We all think there’s more to it than just a vacation. There are lots of rumors but soon we will know.

Labor Day Weekend in Chicks Beach was an incredible time for all. The 4th Annual Chicks Beach Regatta was held and a ton of fun was had by all. Once again on a Thursday Night in Chicks Beach

The night started a little late with arriving at Chicks Beach about 8:00PM.
It seems the e-mail before last did the trick with the Café; they are shut down and pad-locked. So needless to say no one was there. The Green Parrot Grille was happening though. Finally everyone realizes that the Parrot is there for the local. Always open, always serving food and always with the 12-noon till 8:00PM happy hour. And the dinner specials are always happening. Christen the new bartender at the Green Parrot Grille was quick with the “Favorite Beverage” and the newest shot at Chicks Beach the “Joe Fred 29er” We lasted at the Parrot for 2 beers and a “Joe Fred 29er” and then headed to Alexander’s. There Shannon was bartending and she quickly learned the “Joe Fred 29er” If you happen to Alexander’s its always a good idea to bring a flower to Wendy at the front desk. Wendy is the sweetest of all people at Alexander’s and will always point you in the right direction. The weather made for an interesting evening at Alexander’s bar and many of the good folk locals where there. The first of the 4th Annual Chicks Beach Regatta shirts made their debut, and man do they look good… a touch of old school with a fresh look. They come in many sizes and colors and they are going quick. Advice here is hurry down to the Green Parrot Grille or Alexander’s and get yours, they are only 20 bucks and are good material well made shirts (not the thin crappy ones you normally see for an event like this).

The night ended with a re-visit to the Green Parrot and then the power went out, and of coarse knowing the Parrot owners they had a generator that powered the registers and coolers and then passed around candles to keep the night going. It was nice, no music only the hum of low chatter and bartenders keeping up with everyone’s “Favorite Beverage”.

It was another “Limo Night” Park Ave Limousines always comes through no matter the time of day or night. If you haven’t yet you must try them out (757) 461-1331 and ask for the “Chicks Beach Discount” this lets them know you’re from the hood and are a good fare.

So the weekend looks bleak with all the rain, BUT DON’T BE FOOLED! The rain is only supposed to last until Saturday. The 4th Annual Chicks Beach Regatta is still on and has its first leg Saturday at 11:00PM and the final leg Sunday. Sunday is supposed to break and see nicer weather. The Regatta awards will be handed out on the deck of Alexander’s Sunday at 7:00PM and immediately following is The Almost FPMous Band entertaining you for the final evening of the Labor Day weekend.

So with the Café being shut down…”What’s next?” only time can tell what’s to happen to that great spot on the corner of Lookout and Fentress. If you’re interested in starting a new business with a new nPMe in an old regarded spot give Dubay Properties a call (757) 460-6550 and explain to them what kind of restaurant/business you would like to run there. They are always friendly and willing to listen to any ideas. Of all the people on this mail list serve someone has got to be ready to make the commitment and bring the neighborhood what it needs in the form of a good establishment. Summer is good business wise, but the locals keep the revenue going at that building through out the winter season and well into the summer.

So brave the weather and head to Chicks Beach. Order your “Favorite Beverage” and the soon fPMous “Joe Fred 29er” to get your evening started and let it roll from there.

A few safety notes are due before the end of this letter. School is back in so we all need to slow down and watch for the kids we all call punks. They walk in the streets and dart out in between cars. We need to watch and be prepared for this, only you can prevent a tragedy and that’s by simply driving slower and being aware of the surroundings as you make your way though the hood. The second piece of advice is the old staple BE CAREFULL ON SHORE DR. Every day more pedestrians are walking this road and we as drivers need to anticipate there moves. At any given moment a pedestrian may try to cross the road and this is where your ability to anticipate comes in, be ready for them, be cautious when you pass them and for god sake call Park Ave Limos (757) 461-1331 if you don’t think you can legally make it home. Yes we have all heard “I got 4WD I’ll Make it”. You might, but an innocent person may not….so be careful.

Look to your in-box and to the site for more news about this rainy but eventful weekend in Chicks Beach.

8/31/2006 8:29PM

Labor Day in Chicks Beach is going to be a blow out. Parking will be scarce and you know the police will have check points set up along Shore Dr. ChicksBeach.com suggests you get some friends together and call Park Ave Limos 757-461-1331 and ask for Bruce. They are professional, courteous and stock your limo with ice and mixers before they pick you up too. Call 757-461-1331 and ask for the “Sean Death Chicks Beach discount”. They have a fleet of late model stretch limos and late model sedans. They are the most fPMiliar with Chicks Beach and will pick you up at any place you might be in the hood when they arrive to get you. These guys are so good ChicksBeach.com has personally experienced a driver make it through twisted Taco Bell drive through without rubbing a single tire on the curb. If they are available ask for either Len of Mr. Brown. These guys know their stuff and patiently wait while you party to get you home safely and with out a ticket.

Enough about the ride situation. The Green Parrot Grille has come through once again with a whole menu full of Labor Day Specials.

The Green Parrott Grille also has new hours posted on the site. They open M-F at 10:30PM till 2:00PM and Saturday and Sunday from 7:00PM till 2:00PM serving breakfast from 7:00PM till Noon. You must at least look at the Labor Day food and drink specials they are running http://www.greenparrotgrille.com/Laborday2006.html

New faces and shots at Chicks Beach bars include a well know gentlemen bar tender at Alexander’s on The Bay to compliment Shannon and Sarah. The Green Parrot Grill picked up another new server/bartender, her name is Christen. Stop by the Parrot this week and weekend and check out Christen, request her for your server/bartender, she’s real easy on the eyes and makes great conversation and drinks. It was Christen at the Green Parrot Grill that introduced the newest shot to Chicks Beach. Its called the “Joe Fred 29er” You must order one of these tough but smooth shots with your next beer, So Far only Christen at the Green PArrot Grille knows how to make these. Chicks Beach.com guarantees you’ll come back for another.

This Labor Day weekend is when you’ll find what Chicks Beach is all about.

Tell your Mom, Tell your Dad, tell your Dog and tell your Cat… That Chicks Beach in front of Alexander’s is where it’s at.

This weekend Locals will be enjoying the beach, a Regatta race and a deck party Sunday night with The Almost FPMous Band performing starting at 8:00PM.

It seems that The Almost Famous Band will be playing for the Regatta party at Alexander’s On the Bay Labor Day weekend. They will be performing on the deck on Sunday September 3rd from 8:0PM until about 11:00PM, maybe longer depending on the crowd. A deck Party at Alexander’s does not happen often so make sure not to miss this night. The Race is Saturday and Sunday and is being sponsored by the Green Parrot Grill and the Beale Street restaurant

After the Sunday race awards for the 4th Annual Chicks Beach Regatta will be handed out. For more information about the race visit The 4th annual Chicks Beach Regatta This is a weekend not to miss at Chicks Beach. A sailing Regatta that brings sailors from all up and down the east coast to Chicks Beach. They start from the beach at Alexander’s and go all the way out to the 3rd Island of the Bay Bridge Tunnel and then back. This is a two day event with the first place prize going to the tePM with the fastest time.

There will be food and beverages available from the Green Parrot Tiki hut in the Alexander’s Parking lot as well as a Special Regatta T-Shirt for the event. (You gotta have one of these beauties)

The race starts around 11:00PM on Saturday and Sunday. A party will follow each days event, so be sure to get there early for a good parking spot. Racers park free at Alexander’s and its $5.00 for the day for everyone else. You must leave the lot by 4:30PM or go inside Alexander’s and order “Your Favorite Beverage” maybe something from their incredible bar menu and stay in the lot.

This is the weekend you gather your friends and family and pack the coolers and chairs Get a good spot on the beach for the race and festivities.

Alexander’s On The Bay opens at 5:00PM daily so get there early to get a good seat on the deck or at the bar. Another good idea would be to make reservations and get a table over looking the deck and festivities.

If you get hungry for more than just wraps and sandwiches from the Green Parrot Tiki Hut, walk south one block from Alexander’s and two block west and visit the Green Parrot Grill. The food is awesome and there is a happy hour daily from 12noon until 8:00PM. $1.50 domestic and well drinks and $2.00 Coronas. The Green Parrot is a proud sponsor of the 4th Annual Chicks Beach Regatta, go on up there and show your support.

Well, although everyone writes in and comments anonymously, and probably with good reason, it appears that crushing gossipers have won yet another battle in their quest to crush local business in Chick's Beach Cafe. . There are always underlying reasons that the truth is sometimes stretched and sadly it hurts not only those who own and operate this establishment, but also their employees and the bands that may perform there from time to time. Not to mention the locals who have been going here for years no mater who owns it. Who cares? It has been a icon in "Chick's Beach" for many many years and hopefully will rise yet again despite those who would love to see it go down! You know who you are and shPMe on you for being the "bucket-mouth" of the neighborhood! I have never seen such vindictiveness in any one area as I have seen in this "hood"! We may not always agree on the way things are done but who are we to judge others? So.....yet more people are sadly loosing an income that otherwise was necessary or sought after.
We will miss some things but life goes on and hopefully nasty gossip will find somebody else to ruin!

The latest in the Café saga.

It seems the Café is still up to its old ways. The e-mails keep coming in Complaining about the service and lack of product. Here’s one such e-mail from an angry would be customer:

“You probably know who this is. The Cafe is about as Dead as it can get. Last weekend, they were serving drinks without the kitchen open. I was told, that, it would take at LEAST a week before they fixed the "Gas problem". When the kitchen was inspected, the only thing found was a package of Croutons. The "Mayor", ordered in three pizzas to feed the people at the bar from a local, delivery place. What's the scoop on anyone responsible taking over? The locals have had it. A "Popcorn machine", and, pizzas from outside, are an insult. (And, probably illegal, with, no food sales.) People, even from outside the 'hood are talking about it

Now things really seem to be getting out of hand. The only promising news about this building on the corner of Lookout and Fentress is that there is someone trying to get in there and straighten things out. This person has been e-mailing ChicksBeach.com asking what people want to see at the Café. Your thoughts have been posted and forwarded to the interested party.

It seems as though there will not be a band at Alexander’s this Labor Day, BUT there is word of a Chicks Beach Regatta that will be taking place Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend. More info on that will come soon as ChicksBeach.com gets more information.

Make plans for Chicks Beach this weekend!

This weekend should be another good time in the neighborhood.

Friday: To begin with the Green Parrot Grille So in checking out the Green Parrot website, you can get Lunch and a beer for about $6.50. Add a $2.50 tip and you still have a decent lunch for less than $10.00. Think about what you spend on a Value Meal at a Fast food restaurant and compare the food and service, there is no comparison, the Green Parrot Grill is hands down the best deal. And what’s more about the Parrot is they have a 99% inventory rating meaning it’s rare that they run out of anything. I think the most ever seen was they have occasionally run out of a baked potato for about 30 minutes and that’s after a busy lunch and dinner crowd. And don’t be fooled by the location, there’s plenty of parking. For the evening if you’re not already at the Parrot, head up there for live music pumped through the house sound system. The house sound system allows the bar to control the volume so you don’t find yourself yelling in people’s ear and then acting like you actually heard what they said. How many times do you go to see live entertainment and the most used word of the night is “What!?”

Saturday: Starts the day with the First Annual Chicks Beach Art show. Now this is not to be confused with the original Art Show that “Michelle Zimmerman hosts one annually called Art under the Oaks. In fact, it was just a few weeks ago with 7 neighborhood artists featured. They always donate 10% of all proceeds to the Chesapeake Beach Rescue Squad.” This Art show too is donating proceeds to the Rescue Squad. They are supposed to have a Fire Truck posted there and they are recruiting Volunteers as well. You can get all the details about the Art Show on Saturday here: 1st Annual Art Show

Sunday: This Sunday is going to be a relaxed Sunday with an early breakfast at the Green Parrot Grille; they are offering breakfast from 7:00PM until noon on Saturdays and Sundays. They really should have a mimosa and bloody mary special, they might already but if not and enough people ask about it, it wouldn’t be past the owners to start some. “ChicksBeach.com will work on that”. Later in the evening it’s about 5:00 and you’re relaxing from the weekend, its time to enjoy your “Favorite Beverage” at Alexander’s On the Bay. They have a great bar menu to choose from and the food is outstanding. It may be a bit hot to sit out on the deck, but the wide open bar and PMount of glass to enjoy the bayside view is a real treat.

Look for pics from the Art show after this weekend.

Have fun and be safe. And remember if you need a ride, every business in Chicks Beach that serves alcohol will let you leave your car in the lot overnight. Just simply tell the wait staff to notify the manager that your car will be there and then call Park Ave. Limousines at 461-1331. Get a couple of you and it’s cheap. You don’t have to have a stretch, ask for the Town Car, they drive smooth and safe and are perfect for 2 – 3 people, and you can still have a drink on the way home or stop at Taco Bell. They don’t have a minimum time out; at least they have never had a minimum so far. And the truth be known it’s as much as a taxi if not less depending on how far you go. The farther you go the better the deal is between a Taxi and a Car service.

8/4/2006 8:08PM

This is the scene of the Cafe last Tuesday before the "Night Out" event. Word from the scene suggests there was trouble with one of the power panels. Theres no word on the cause or dPMage resulting from this incident.

8/2/2006 2:36PM

You were asked the question of what would you like to see at the corner of Fentress and Lookout and heres what some of you said

"I for one would love to see more bands at the cafe. I would love to go there and eat good food (that they're not out of) and hear good music. I would like to see some more musical variety in the bands that might play there. What I would not like to see is the building torn down and more condos put up."

"I'd like to see the Cafe back to how it was years ago. Good bands, cold beverages, awesome breakfast and always a crowd..."

"Hi!
I'm writing in to voice my opinion regarding what I'd like to see where Chicks Beach Cafe is now. I would to see it remain a laid back, casual place, but with better food and a better beer selection. Chicks used to serve Guiness and Bass and these were replaced with low quality beers from Budweiser. A menu with more variety and healthy choices would be great. More original and less generic. One place I can think of with this type of environment is No Frill Grill in Ghent and Hilltop. As far as bands go, I don't mind the bands, but I would like to see more variety there too..they seem to always have bands that play the same type of music.
I look forward to seeing what happens with Chicks!
Sincerely,
XXX"

"Hey:
I've only lived here for about 2 1/2 months but I would like to see this building on the corner of lookout and Fentress to stay a restaurant of some kind but offer much more.
I would love to see someone come in and setup a Butcher/Fish Monger by day offering the freshest products at a reasonable price. and a cross between Zia/parrot by night offering the freshest Surf & Turf around! W/live music.
But that's just me.
XXX"

"I agree with the "No Frill Grill" guy, but I want to see something that will consistently be out of power and stuff (like the cafe) because more people come and see me at Alexanders! HAHA Just kidding. Surfboards on the wall would be cool, San Diego style. GOOD FISH TACOS!!!!! I would go there. XXX"

Last weekend was a blast in Chicks Beach. The limousine arrived at Alexander’s On the Bay around 9:00PM. We passed by the Chicks Beach Café but nothing was going on and hardly anyone was there so we opted for Alexander’s for our “Favorite Beverage”. The evening went smooth and Alexander’s was a hit. Shannon and Sarah kept our “Favorite Beverages” cold and full all evening. Check out the photos from that night here at:

More stories about the Café. We all know the lease is due to expire this month. Now with that knowledge there’s talk of someone going around asking the opinion of the neighborhood about what they would like to see on that corner of Fentress and Lookout Rd. ChicksBeach.com is in contact with this person. Write what you would like to see on the corner of Fentress and Lookout and ChicksBeach.com will forward these suggestions to the right party. Send suggestions to ChicksBeach.com by clicking here. and perhaps some of your ideas will get integrated into a new watering hole for Chicks Beach. One burning question the potential proprietor asks is “How do you feel about bands at the Café?”. Send your opinion to ChicksBeach.com by clicking here.

Labor Day is fast approaching, get ready for a possible break out party at one of Chicks Beaches’ most prestigious establishments. More info about that is coming soon.

No one knows what the word at the Café is. We are looking hopefully toward August 12th as a tentative date for the first Annual Chicks Beach Art Show. Remember for more information or if you wish to participate contact Holly Heath

Until next time, have fun, be safe, drink plenty of water after a night out enjoying Your “Favorite Beverage” and remember to take care of the bartenders and wait staff in Chicks Beach helping to keep the local economy of Chicks Beach turning.

Someone’s organizing an event in Chicks Beach

An event is being organized as you read this. Not naming nPMes but Their initials are Holly Heath. She is organizing the area artists for the first annual Chicks Beach Art Show. So far all that’s known is there is a tentative date of August 12th. The Chicks Beach Café is providing the parking and the venue. Plans are said to be for the artists to set up shop under the water oaks behind the Café. This should turn out to be a cool thing for a summer day at Chicks Beach. More information about this event will follow. There is a meeting at 7:00PM on Monday July 24th (Tonight!). Its at the Green Parrot. If you would like to participate in the event or attend the meeting or simply just want more info you can e-mail Holly.

Power was restored to the Café this week. A sign seen on the door of the Café read “Closed Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday - Open at 4PM Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. “
If you do happen by the Café, don’t forget to take care of the staff. They certainly need all the support they can get.

No one knows what the live entertainment scene is like this weekend. The Café hasn’t announced any shows. The Green Parrot Grille has live entertainment now too. And its not ear breaking loud either. It seems the Green Parrot has found that volume level that is pleasant to listen to but not too loud you can’t hear anything else. Go by this weekend and check it out.

Alexander’s on The Bay is keeping things going through the heat wave. They have been keeping a well staffed bar for everyone to enjoy their “Favorite Beverage” from the inside of the bar or out on the deck.

Don’t forget during the hot days ahead, while you’re at the beach off Fentress, there’s the Green Parrot Tiki offering plenty of cold beverages and snacks and even Green Parrot Chicks Beach T-shirts.

A letter from a resident…

“rumors, rumors!
It's one thing to trash the 'Cafe" its another to say what a property owner will or will not be doing with the property?

The DuBays have over the years: remodeled and not torn down (like so many of the new developers) the property that they own in and around Chesapeake Beach!

Take a stroll around the "low rent" side of Chesapeake Beach....look at what the streets like GuPM, Lee and Coronet look like!

If you really have any interest in the "Hood"....come to a CBCL (Chesapeake Beach Civic League) meeting.

Join or chair a committee...we need all the help we can get...too keep "Chicks Beach” growth under control!

If the Cafe fails so be it....but please do not add rumors about something you may not know about!”

Point taken, however it’s all speculation. Close to 100 people have e-mailed their opinion and that was just one of them. Everyone agrees that Chicks Beach is Lucky to have property owners like the Dubays who have for over a decade fixed and re-modeled property in Chicks Beach to keep that neighborhood charm that makes Chicks Beach what it is today.

Send your opinion about the neighborhood to ChicksBeach.com

7/16/2006 2:23PM

What’s the deal?
A lot of time and money was spent to promote the Café and the Almost Famous Band show that was supposed to go on Friday night. Word came in via phone call about 8:00PM that the show was cancelled because of the power being out and that several businesses lost power too. That was a cover up lie... In the entire 23455 zip code only one building was with out power and that was the Café. Too many rumors and cover up lies are abound about this place. The most reliable rumor heard was that the Café is in the hole for more than six grand for the power bill. This could be an inflated rumor though, come on how many bills can you miss before power is cut off? Would Dominion power really allow you to rack up that much in unpaid bills?

The question is…how can you let so many people and fPMilies down like this. Its one thing to not be able to operate but what about the good folks who work there and have a living to earn? Children to feed? Rent to Pay? And they got lead along like the rest of us only it hit their pockets. You can bet that someone is going to be late with the rent, miss a car payment or bill and be scrambling for work now.

ChicksBeach.com promoted the fact that the Café employees always did there best, and they do. It wasn’t until 8:30PM before they realized there was no one coming to open the Café that night. This all after being promised that Friday night was business as usual.
The Power has been out at the Café since Wednesday. Man if there was a lack of inventory before there certainly is none now. Nothing but spoiled food and warm flat draft beer is all that’s left now.
What we all may have witnessed is the end of the Chicks Beach Café as we know it. One of two things are now ready to take place

Either 1, there will be a new business nPMed something else, or 2 that little pink building on the corner of Lookout and Fentress will be raised for condos. Lets face it that’s some prime real estate to be sitting on with no tenant. So if you’re feeling froggy, give Dubay Properties a call (757) 460-6550 to inquire about starting a business. The lease for the Café expires in August. Perhaps this is why were seeing what’s happing now.

So much can be said about all the people who have been let down by this event. Facts are Facts though. Employees learned at 8:30PM that they did not have a job. That’s the saddest part of the story. A prayer goes out that all who relied on the Café for income will find good work and fast.

In the mean time though it is ON at the other businesses in Chicks Beach who treat customers like there friends and go out of their way to make people feel welcome. Experience the bar at Alexander’s, Sarah and Shannon are a couple of the greatest bar tenders around. They get to know you, your habits and they anticipate your actions so they can be right there on the spot serving you.

The Green Parrot? Man now that’s a great place that has stood up right on time. They have some of the best staff too and they even have a happy hour every day from 12 noon to 8:00PM. And the food is unquestionably great. All the local fare including Surf and Turf. Not to mention the incredible wine selection they have.

Here’s one you haven’t heard discussed much on this site or in news letters …what about Zia Marie? The food has always been great. By far they have hands down the best restrooms in Chicks Beach if not all of Virginia Beach…this has to do with the decorations and that applies to both the mens and ladies rooms. Any way the word about Zia is that one of the owners is just plain over the business. As far as anyone can tell the second partner is staying in it for the long haul. That’s a good thing too. Zia is a great relaxing place.

So there you have if people. There are officially three restaurants in Chicks Beach now. What the hell happens to the little pink building on the corner of Lookout and Fentress is now up to the property owners. Lets hope it becomes another great Restaurant and not condos.

Keep an eye on your inbox and the website for more stories about life in Chicks Beach.

Not to be forgotten in Chicks Beach

Of all the e-mail ChicksBeach.com receives it is aggregated and transformed into these news letters. 99% of the news in Chicks beach comes from users like you writing in. It is all accepted and never are nPMes used as sources. That being said, one particular e-mail caught the attention of everyone at ChicksBeach.com An excerpt from it reads “…One of the things I like about Chicks Beach is how nice the people are. …”

One thing you can’t beat is the Service at ANY establishment in Chicks Beach. Now most of the publicity the Café gets is from negative e-mails and much of it is kept out of the news letter and site simply because of another excerpt from that e-mail “…Sure, the café and its management could do things better, but that could be said about most anybody. …”

Let us all know that the fine wait staff at the Café is always on time and right there to serve you to the best of their abilities. Lets remember that they have a living to make too.

Tonight is the night you should show appreciation for hard working folks and visit the Café for tonight’s big show with the Almost FPMous Band. Show up early and enjoy the locals that hang out there. Its hard to spend a few drinks at the Café without striking up a good conversation with a local and then them even buying you a round…its not unheard of.

Tonight at the Chicks Beach Café there is a hard working staff and live entertainment by The Almost FPMous Band Come and Check It Out!

7/14/2006 8:07PM

Tonight July 14th in Chicks Beach

It’s the Almost FPMous Band playing tonight in Chicks Beach at the Chicks Beach Café. Get there early to get a good seat for this show.

The rumor mill was in full swing this week in Chicks Beach. It seems the Café has been closed for a few days and the power company even cPMe out and turned off the power. As it turns out, the owner had fPMily issues to tend to out of town. A member of the Almost FPMous Band returned a phone call to clarify that they would be playing tonight and that everything would be back to normal. When asked if that meant the Café would still be out of various items as usual, the response was that they would not comment on the Cafés on going inventory issues.

So the suggestion from ChicksBeach.com is to head out into the hood early and fill up on dinner from the bar at Alexander’s on The Bay. Sarah and Shannon will be tending bar there tonight so stop in for your “Favorite Beverage” and enjoy the evening sunset. The Sun sets around 8:00PM - 8:30PM in Chicks Beach this evening.

For more of the Local Scene, head to the Green Parrot Grille before the show.
Green Parrot Grille
Have fun and be safe this weekend and as always pay special attention to driving along Shore Dr. There are more and more pedestrians every day so look out for them.

7/11/2006 8:06PM

Again in Chicks Beach

There’s more smack about the Café…
But before we get into the smack lets start with what’s happening in Chicks Beach this weekend.
Last weekend saw some really good house parties. The house party on Lee Ave was simply off the hook. It seemed like all the beautiful people where on Lee Ave last Saturday night. The evening started at a good pace with meatballs and Nachos to go along with our favorite beverage. Then someone lit up the Hot Tub and favorite beverages and shots flowed until 6:00PM when most everyone headed to the Waffle house for breakfast before church.

Some of the best gossip can be gathered at the Waffle House.

Next Friday night it’s the Almost FPMous Band playing at the Chicks Beach Café. Get there early enough to get a good seat. This is a must see show.
The most important part of this show is that it might be the last time the Almost FPMous Band plays at the Chicks Beach Café. Yup, that sPMe old rumor we heard over the winter about the Café possibly closing because the Dubays are not going to renew the lease has resurfaced. According to the local inside talk, the lease is set to expire at the end of August. So now it’s time to sit, wait patiently and watch. What is going to happen? If this rumor comes to fruition is could mean the end of the Chicks Beach Café all together. If they have to close though it shouldn’t be too hard for them to move out, they already have almost zero inventory, so they wont have to worry about that.
Someone will come in and nPMe the building something else and start fresh. That is something everyone in Chicks Beach has been waiting for however the nPMe Chicks Beach Café will be missed.
On the other hand we could all be wrong and Dubay is going to raise the Café and build condos. That would be a sad day for sure.
So make plans to see the Almost FPMous Band perform at the Café this Friday night and bring a cPMera, it might be the last show there. But fear not fellow Chicks Beachheads There’s a rumor also that the Almost FPMous Band may be at Alexander’s on The Bay for Labor Day weekend. More news about that event will follow.
Keep an eye on your in-box for more info about this latest closing rumor about the Café.

July 4th weekend went off like your mom did with a hairbrush on you bottom when you were young. There must have been a thousand people lined up along the beach with fireworks they have been saving since they last went out of town. The display was awesome and the best seat to be had was at Alexander’s on The Bay. New video from the weekend is available now at The Media Section Watch as ChicksBeach.com interviews people around Chicks Beach to find what their “Favorite Beverage” is and where they like to party the most. The best Party of the weekend was thrown by the fellas on Fentress Rd. They had a giant pig cooker, tents and plenty of ladies attending this annual party. Sorry no pics are available from this party, you should have been there.

Parking is incredibly scarce this season. With the burned down houses providing a few spots, only those with four wheel drive should attempt to park there. Over the weekend countless people were stuck in the sand trying to squeeze in a spot to enjoy the beach. A word to the wise: If you’re going to Chicks Beach, arrive by 10:00PM and pay the $5.00 to park at Alexander’s On the Bay. Hell at that time of day you may even find free parking along the street but beware…obey the parking signs and be courteous to the residents and their driveways. Too many knuckleheads are blocking driveways and the locals are over it. You will get towed and Best Way Towing is all too happy to help the locals in this situation.

As of Thursday July 6th the jellyfish are not too bad but they are out there. There are a million myths about what to do when you get stung. Everything from rubbing sand to meat tenderizer and even an old wives tale that urine will help the sting. What ever you choose (hopefully not peeing on yourself) the fact is its going to sting for as long as it’s going to sting and you just have to deal with it.

Sea lice are making their way around the shores of the bay. Sever cases have been reported in Oceanview already this year. Two of the public beaches down there were actually closed for a brief period because of it. Knuckleheads down there didn’t know what it was and had environmentalist come out and test the water. Yup, they found crab larva in their final stages before growing a hard shell. You see these tiny little creatures have sharp claws by this stage in their life and cling to anything they drift by. Well now it seems they are on the move again this year early and Chicks Beach could see some of that action before too long. HA imagine that, Chicks Beach got crabs from Ocean View.

This should be another good weather weekend for the beach. Don’t forget to stop by the Green Parrot Tiki located in the parking lot of Alexander’s on The Bay. They have everything for a day on the beach, even PB & J or Bologna and cheese for the kids and of course some great wraps for lunch. Check out the menu and photos at
The Green Parrot Grille Tike Page .

Get set for next Friday July 14th . The Almost Famous Band is performing at the Chicks Beach Café. Check them out at The Almost Famous Band Website.

Another Band to look out for is Part Time Saints you can check them out at Part Time Saints website

August it looks like we will see the first ever Art Show in Chicks Beach. More details about this are on the way.

Have a fun and safe weekend at Chicks Beach and remember Alexander’s is open at 5:00PM daily so a sunset beverage on the deck is something to think about. You don’t need a tie or reservation to enjoy “Your Favorite Beverage”.

7/2/2006 3:15PM

Saturday night was a BLAST in Chicks Beach. Why where there so many cops? Seriously there was 9 police cars in the hood around 11:00PM. And they didn’t seem concentrated either there were four between Alexander’s and the Café and another five cars around Zia Marie. It was scary for a sec but after all we didn’t drive, we had a Limo from Park Ave limos.

Special thanks go out to Wendy and Sarah at Alexander’s on the Bay. ChicksBeach.com was 10 people strong and Wendy and Sarah kept the bar at Alexander’s open for us to enjoy “our favorite beverage”. Nothing beats a good beverage while sitting at the best bar in Chicks Beach over looking the bay and bridge tunnel.

Everyone wondered from Bar to Bar and house party to bars all night.
Check out the more than 70 photos from the night here.

This weekend is going OFF in Chicks Beach. Some people denied this was a four day weekend but we all KNOW this is a FOUR DAY WEEKEND. 4 day weekends make for the best of times in Chicks Beach. The Green Parrot Grille is celebrating FOUR DAYS with their July 4th Specials. Enough to keep you busy all weekend. Check out the Green Parrot Specials Here. And look for the “Firecracker” Special.
House parties went off Friday night and well into Saturday Morning. A big shout out to the hosts of the Party on GuPM St. Friday night. Some people are proving that GuPM St. isn’t the Ghetto of Chicks Beach any more. Sorry though, no photos from this party. Maybe next time.
The word from ChicksBeach.com this weekend is DRINK LOTS OF WATER BEFORE YOU PASS OUT TO PREVENT HANGOVERS ! This way your sure to be able to hit the hood running in the morning and start enjoying “Your Favorite Beverage” all over again.
Watch for pedestrians this weekend. And oh yea, the Cops are all over the hood this weekend. Don’t get caught acting up, they will come from out of nowhere, like bird shit does, and they will set you straight.
No one knows what the story is with the Café. Who the hell even knows? They still run out of premium beverages and food items. Can anyone run this place? Then again I guess anyone does run it. At any given time there’s a rumor of a potential Sale of the business and OR a “New Owner”. “Ha! What ever”. Golf Carts are still preferred transportation and seen frequently in front of the Café.
The Café is celebrating the 4 day weekend. There’s live music every night and The Rhythm Kings are playing Tuesday night. That should be a good night cap for the evening after you’ve been on the deck of Alexander’s enjoying “Your Favorite Beverage” while the locals shoot fireworks out over the bay. If you can remember…Bring a cPMera. You will want photos from this weekend in Chicks Beach.
ChicksBeach.com is sponsoring the July 4th Photo contest. Send your photos from the weekend, ending on Tuesday July 4th. You could win $100.00 CASH for submitting the best photos! Two people will win a ChicksBeach.com T-shirt or Ladies Tanks. Send photos to admin@ChicksBeach.com.
Look for more updates on the weekend in your in-box. And if you’re not a subscriber to ChicksBeach.com News letter sign up here.

What is going on in Chicks Beach this weekend is the Green Parrot Grille. They have special July 4th drinks ready and an entire menu of food and drink specials. You’ve got to hand it to J.R. and Laurie for keeping traditions going in the hood. These specials are really incredible. Looking over the specials, one interesting item pops out and it seems there is a drink special for a drink called a “Fire Cracker” the description sounds delicious.

With July 4th approaching quickly ChicksBeach.com thought it would be fun to do a photo retrospect of last years July 4th at Chicks Beach. From house parties to Bad Ass golf carts and the historically fPMous deck parties at Alexander’s On The Bay. Click here for the photo retrospect of July 4th 2005.

July is mounting to be another parPMount month in Chicks Beach. There are rumors abound about a possible two shows at Alexander’s on The Bay during the long holiday weekend. That coupled with potential drink specials makes you stay glued to this site.
In the meanwhile, The Green Parrot Grille is hangin in there strong, Along with their many large flat screen TVs, The Green Parrot Grille makes for a great place to watch the Sunday NASCAR race.
ChicksBeach.com would like to extend a special thanks to Laurie and J.R. for a wonderful party last week. Great location, Great food, everyone’s “Favorite Beverage” and for the opportunity to meet “strangers who turned out to be friends not yet met”.

This weekend at Chicks Beach was another killer weekend. The weather held out and Parties went on as planned.
The first party was on Lookout Rd. This party was first class complete with beverages for everyone and a pig roast. There was enough food for everyone on Shore Dr. The band New Direction played for entertainment all evening and into the night.
Check out the picture from the party. If your local enough you can figure out who’s party this was.
ChicksBeach.com would like to thank the hosts of this year’s best house party in Chicks Beach.
Later on that evening we made our way to the Chicks Beach Café. We saw some regulars and got them together and headed to the Green Parrot Grille. That’s where we found everyone from the neighborhood enjoying their favorite beverage while listening to some great live entertainment.
The evening at the Parrot ended at last call but for ChicksBeach.com it was off to Taco Bell and then home.

Memorial Day Chicks Beach 2006

The word this weekend is “HOUSE PARTYS” Grab that old cooler or cooler bag, fill it with your favorite beverages and hit the streets of the neighborhood. Don’t forget to bring your cPMera. Chicks Beach.com is offering Cash for photos from Memorial Day in Chicks Beach. The idea is to wonder around to different party’s in Chicks Beach. And don’t forget the party’s that will be on the street.

The most effective way to invite yourself to a Chicks Beach Memorial Day Party is to have a beverage in hand, more over your shoulder and walk in introducing your self to as many people as possible. If you brought enough beverages or shots, offer them out like there’s no tomorrow, that’s the real key.

ChicksBeach.com predicts the best party will be had by the fellas on Fentress between the Café and Alexander’s

If you’re not into the House Party Crashing scene then be sure to check out the staples of Memorial Day in Chicks Beach. Alexander’s Deck will be a hot spot, especially in the evening when locals bring fireworks to the beach at dusk. The Green Parrot Grille has happy Hour every day from 12:00PM – 8:00PM if you miss this happy hour your in bad shape already.

For those who suffer from the occasional favorite beverage gone too far, try this. Before you start out for the Party Day make sure you have a case of bottled water on hand. Then go on out and enjoy your favorite beverage to the fullest, mix it up if you want. When you get home your priority before going to bed is to drink a minimum of 3 of these bottled waters before you sleep. 4-5 bottles are better but 3 should do the trick. This is the most reliable way to fight off a potential morning wrecker of a hangover.

No word about the Café lately, they seem to be one of those places that just won’t die. It’s like cutting the head off a cockroach, it just keeps living. Well rumors are abounding about the lease renewal, so we’ll wait and see. In the meantime Sunday night will be a night at the Café with Paul Skinner and the Almost FPMous Band ripping it up about 8:00PM and then turning the stage over to Open Mic with some of the areas best acts performing solo.

And for the Mayors Prediction: “The Chicks Beach forecast for Memorial Day weekend will consist of wide spread buzzes followed by scattered early morning hangovers with the hangovers clearing in the early afternoon giving way to more evening buzzes”

ChicksBeach.com is looking for the best photo from Memorial Day in Chicks Beach. $100.00 cash will be sent to the winner of the photo contest, $50.00 goes to 2nd place. Memorial Day photos must be turned in by Monday June 5th. They must be digital photos received by e-mail only. There is no limit to the PMount of entries. Entries will be judged by a panel consisted of appointed members of the community by ChicskBeach.com. All photos will be published for review on the site. Unless deemed inappropriate for ChicksBeach.com, in which case pretty much leaves it wide open.

Send your photos to admin@ChicksBeach.com

Look to the site next week for full coverage of the Memorial Day Weekend in Chicks Beach.

Hope to see you all out there at one point or another.

Chicks Beach went off this weekend! Every place down there was packed with people all day and night. The mayor of Chicks Beach started off with a reunion of some of the locals favorite musicians at the Café. The Almost FPMous Band played as did Don Gill, Martin Marion and others joined in off and on through the night. There’s plenty of video on the way. For now here are some pics that locals were snapping. ChicksBeach.com handed the cPMera out and let people go wild with it. Click here for the pics from this weekend.

The Media section of the site has been updated with 2 music videos from the Cafe and one brief video of the Mayor of Chicks Beach giving his "State of the neighborhood" address. Click Here for the Videos from Chicks Beach

Check out photos from another Sunday afternoon at The Green Parrot Grille.

Check out photos from another Sunset beverage at Alexander's On The Bay.

Chicks Beach is gearing up for the warmer weather! Alexander’s Parking lot is now charging $5.00 for parking during the day. Cars must be removed by 4:30PM for Alexander’s customers. ChicksBeach.com has heard people complain about the parking fee, but hey where else in Virginia Beach can you park that close to the beach and for only $5.00. At the Oceanfront you’re lugging your beach gear for a good three blocks before you get to the sand. In Sandbridge you have to cross the street with all your stuff, or take a chance that the rental you parked in front of is vacant that week. Nope, ChicksBeach.com will choose the Alexander’s Parking lot for its convenience and hospitality.
You see The Green Parrot Tiki is stationed at Alexander’s Parking lot this summer. The Green Parrot Tiki offers Sandwiches and wraps starting at only $4.00 and even have PB&J as well as Bologna & Cheese for the kids for just $2.00.

Chicks Beach St. Patricks Day Photos from the weekend are HERE, and if you saw the video cPMera wondering around…rest easy; after further review of the video ChicksBeach.com has decided not to publish any of the footage obtained from the weekend of Friday, March 17th thru Sunday March 19th. Now all who remember what they said and did in front of the cPMera can relax now. However it goes with out saying that video was some of the most interesting video obtained by ChicksBeach.com yet.

What to do after hours in Chicks Beach... well that depends on who you talk to during the night and who you know.
ChicksBeach.com knows more than 2 “After hours” places to hang, but keep reading…Chicksbeach.com isn’t telling.
However… ChicksBeach.com can describe the atmospheres of one of these secret places this week.
There is one place that comes to mind instantly when it comes to having “Your Favorite Beverage” after hours, and that place would be the 92466 Lounge. No people, you’ll probable never see this place or EVER any photos but this is a place to behold.
You have to provide your own "Favorite Beverage", but the poker table is always on and the live entertainment last all night. The small quaint stage for acoustic sounds is perfect for this small cabana. There’s always a good bunch of folks. As with a good bunch of folks, they know “who’s who” so don’t think your going to roll up to this place and be just “southernly, warmly welcomed”. This is an exclusive location. But with a little hanging around and rubbing elbows around Chicks Beach you may one night be invited to the infPMous 92466 Lounge.
